Special Needs
We have always welcomed special needs children at AWB. We have accommodated children with an array of needs including developmental delays, speech difficulties, medical conditions, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and severe food allergies. We attempt to be inclusive in whatever ways we can for each child.
Children are welcomed on a case-by-case basis. Acceptance to our programs depends on the type and severity of the child’s needs and the ability of the teachers to accommodate them appropriately. A tryout period of 2 months may be enacted to make sure the situation is workable and teachers are meeting the needs of the child. Parents may be asked to provide a therapeutic support specialist or other one-on-one aide to accompany their child to AWB. Support specialists and therapists for developmental, physical, speech, and occupational needs are welcome in the classrooms and should make arrangements directly with the teacher.
Our staff has limited special education training and we want your child to have the best experience we can offer at AWB. The preschool teacher is willing to be present at IEP conferences when her schedule allows for it.
We have been able to accommodate children with severe food allergies. AWB is a NUT-FREE school. The preschool classroom is nut-free and has been dairy-free in the past. The staff has been trained to use epi-pens. We have been able to substitute art materials or projects in the case of contact allergies.
